MARKET LINKAGE ASSOCIATE

The Market Linkage Assistant will report to the Head of Market Linkage and will be responsible for execution of our strategy to link farmers to traders in the informal market. We are looking for someone who is entrepreneurial, likes to get their boots muddy, thrives on creating order from chaos, and is motivated to join an early stage start-up with huge potential for growth.   • Select, train and supervise Tulaa Certified Aggregators (TCAs) to ensure growth of our market linkage service with a high degree of customer satisfaction
  • Consistent training of TCAs on issues such as quality control, price negotiations, logistics, farmer aggregation, farm visits and sampling
  • Support the Head of Market Linkage to manage Tulaa trader/market relations by taking orders, visiting respective produce markets, ensuring timely fulfillment of orders, following up on payments for fulfilled orders, and other tasks as required
  • Ensure that the TCAs secure commitments from farmers to sell their produce through Tulaa
  • Ensure that each order from a trader is fulfilled in a timely manner with 100% satisfaction of all parties
  • Work closely with the Head of Input Sales & Agronomy to train farmers on the best farming and harvesting practices to guarantee the best quality and variety of produce for specific markets
  • Train farmers on Tulaa’s minimum quality requirements by crop
  • Ensure all proforma invoices of collected produce is duly filled and signed by the farmer
  • Ensure timely and accurate payments by traders to Tulaa for orders fulfilled
  • Communicate with Finance and Product & Engineering team to ensure payments and messaging to aggregators, the laborers and the farmers (less the loan amount) are made in a timely and accurate manner
  • Make timely and accurate updates to data regarding traders, farmers aggregators and transactions to the Tulaa Brokerage Tool
  • Capture lessons learned and communicate them effectively to leadership that enables improvements to our strategy and/or operations related to market linkage
  • Identify and recruit more traders and aggregators as Tulaa’s brokerage model expands its coverage and throughput
  • Provide support by collecting, relaying and analyzing market information such as prevailing market prices, different crop varieties and quality required by each market,
  • Collaborate closely with Business Development Officers to ensure that all sides of the platform (inputs, credit and market linkage) are linked and well-coordinated
  • Proactively communicate internally about Tulaa’s brokerage model as it evolves, including problems and potential solutions identified as well as opportunities for product/service development and/or enhancement
  • Contribute to raising the bar across the company in terms of performance, reliability, emotional intelligence and grit
  • Ensure timely booking of the produce in the quantities that match with placed orders by traders. A harvest schedule of the same to be prepared and submitted to the Head of Market Linkage at least 24 hours ahead of time to allow for better planning.
  • Identify the most affordable labor that would deliver the best results possible. This includes but not limited to identification of harvesters, sorters & graders, transporters etc
Skills and Qualifications

  • A minimum of a diploma, preferably a bachelor’s degree, in business or related field
  • At least 2-3 years of experience in sales in the agriculture sector

Our vision is to become the leading marketplace driving rural commerce in Africa.The Head of Input Sales & Agronomy will have full responsibility over all aspects of the inputs side of our platform and have a unique opportunity to design and execute our strategy to acquire and service a large network of independent agro-vet retailers across Kenya. This channel is vital to expanding Tulaa’s credit-backed input sales and will become an important competitive advantage for the company. We are looking for someone who has a proven record of success in building sales channels, understands the science of farming, cares equally about EBITDA and social impact, and is excited to join an early stage, fast growing start-up.

About the Role

  • Overall responsibility for the design and execution of the company’s strategy to acquire and retain farmers as input customers through multiple channels, especially independent agro-vet retail shops as a key channel for sales of inputs on credit
  • Manage a team of field-based account managers and office-based call center agents to acquire customers and retailers and to ensure on-time fulfillment of orders every time
  • Develop and manage clear, measurable KPIs to achieve sales targets
  • Manage retailer-distributor-brand owner relationships to ensure on-time delivery of inputs every time
  • Design and deliver effective trainings of account managers and call center agents on sales strategy and tactics, agronomy, and our product offering
  • Collaborate closely with Finance and others to ensure appropriate design and application of incentives that delight staff and retailers and yield a high ROI
  • Conduct data-driven segmentation of farmers and retailers using relevant criteria such as location,crops, annual turnover, business acumen, etc. and tailor our acquisition and retention strategies accordingly
  • Select quality inputs to offer farmers on our platform based on best practices in agronomy, growing conditions for farmers on our platform, and availability and affordability of product in the market
  • Maintain up-to-date, accurate crop calendars for each value chain
  • Manage the development and delivery of quality agronomic content via the Call Center and SMS
  • Promote Tulaa and its offerings by attending farmer field days, ASK shows, meetings with farmer groups together with account managers
  • Develop and execute on a strategy to enlist Lead Farmers as low-cost commissioned agents to sell inputs on credit through our platform
  • Work closely with Credit on the timely delivery of affordable input credit through the multiple channels
  • Collaborate across the company to ensure a seamless user experience from inputs and credit through to advisory and market linkage
  • Manage all retailers for sales growth and customer satisfaction
  • Assist CEO in securing and maintaining relationships with input supply partners
  • Systematically collect customer feedback – through qualitative and quantitative research methods –on inputs provided and farm-level results, translate that data into proposed product/service enhancements and collaborate closely with Product & Engineering to bring those to life
  • Assess new value chains to expand into and products to offer based on market trends and best agronomic practices
  • Serve as Tulaa’s point of contact for any issues related to the science of farming
  • Act as a thought partner with the Board of Directors, CEO, CFO and Chief Product Officer on all aspects related to the provision of inputs on credit on our platform
  • Represent Tulaa externally to continue to strengthen our position as a leading ag-tech and fintechinnovator
  • Contribute to raising the bar across the company in terms of performance, reliability, EQ and grit


Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related field required; advanced degree strongly preferred
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in business, preferably in supply chain and/or enterprise sales in the inputs industry

Tulaa Call Centre Advisors are a vital link to the farmers. They build trust in our brand, generating goodwill through the provision of reliable and accurate information, actively listening to the farmers, and putting customer euphoria at the centre of every interaction. .


About the Role

  • Provide expert advice to farmers on good agronomic practices in their local languages on phone
  • Sell approved Tulaa products and services to farmers e.g. input layaways, input credit, etc.
  • Translate and record crop production protocols to voice messages in the local language
  • Create tickets of all inbounds and outbound calls
  • Write weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual call reports for the farmer helpline
  • Answer inbound calls/or emails promptly and in accordance with established procedures
  • Empathize with caller(s) and provide technical advice about the Tulaa program
  • Respond courteously and solve problems to achieve customer euphoria with every interaction
  • Recognize, apply, and explain product knowledge to customers

  • At least two years of field experience as an agriculture extension officer or crop/animal production worker. He/She must have an experience of working with farmers, e.g. NGO that works in the Agricultural sector, Ministry of Food and Agriculture, crop research institute or their equivalent
  • A sound knowledge in telephone etiquette
